Spanish pianist and composer, Alex Conde, arrives at Kalos Music & Art School with his latest album “Descarga for Monk”, a creative and brilliant tribute to the late Thelonius Monk. With impeccable technique and years of studying Spanish academic music, Conde has developed a unique, expression-filled style through which he revisits some of Jazz and Flamenco’s greatest tunes and uses those influences to compose his own masterpieces.

After finishing his studies in Classical Music and Jazz Piano in Spain, Conde is awarded in 2007, a scholarship to the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston, where he performs along with incredible musicians such as Danilo Perez, Wayne Shorter and Maria Schneider, just to name a few. Once graduated, he moves to San Francisco where he continues collaborating with experienced artists such as José Luis Rodríguez, Nino de los Reyes, Jon Arkin and Jeff Chambers. Conde also performs in an annual event with the Juan Siddi Flamenco Santa Fé Aspen Ballet.

Alex Conde has released two albums “Jazz & Claps” ( 2007) and “Barrio del Carmen” (2013). In both albums, he’s let his traditional Flamenco roots shine through with an accurate improvisational technique and beautiful Jazz melodies.

The visit of Alex Conde to our school will feature two culturally enriching experiences:

The first is a Jazz Flamenco Workshop which will be held on October 31st at 11:00 a.m. which is directed to musicians with moderate to professional levels of experience. Instrumentalists, students, singers and those who are passionate about the Flamenco-Jazz, will enjoy this special workshop. Conde will offer a brief outline of the history of Spanish music and the reciprocal influence with Latin American culture, known as “Ida y vuelta” (There and back). The workshop will also focus on how to sing or “Palo Flamenco”, palm techniques and other useful tools to interact with the participants with the fundamentals and principles of improvisations that are used in Jazz.

This unique experience will culminate with a Close-Up concert on November 5th, in which Alex Conde, will share with the audience his ideas about composition, the styles and different rhythms applied to Jazz and especially focus on the music of Thelonius Monk. Eugenia Méndez, singer, pianist and teacher coordinator at Kalos Music and the renowned Uruguayan violinist Federico Britos -who was awarded a Latin Grammy in 2004 for Best Latin Jazz Album- will complete the brilliant roster of musicians for this special journey through Jazz, Flamenco and Spanish Classical Music.

Kalos Music & Art School continues its commitment as an educational center and diffuser of cultural experiences by offering unparalleled experiences which integrate both entertainment and learning all while supporting the work and talent of artists, musicians, composers and performers in a fresh, intimate and familiar setting.
